Why is mining done in the aravallis

asbestor (whoopie), soapstone, lead, phosphate rock, ball clay, calcite,......
The Aravalli Range is incredibly rich in minerals, which has led to illegal mining practicing being widespread. The Aravalli Hills portion may actually be the oldest hills on the planet!

Mines in the Aravalli Hills of Rajasthan contain immense mineral wealth, including jasper, zinc, fluorite, gypsum, marble, asbestor (whoopie), soapstone, lead, phosphate rock, ball clay, calcite, sandstone... and the list goes on.

About 25 years ago, large scale mining of marble and granite began, so much that the forest cover has been destroyed - only about 10% of it remains. As I've already said, mining is illegal according to the Supreme Court of India.

So the "why?" Because people can get rich, and some people have no problem breaking the law to get rich.
