How to make money as an engineer student

I myself (also studying mechanical engineering) started a job as a general CAD guy a few weeks ago and Im amazed at how much they dont teach you at colleges and universities (have attended both, like the former better). Regarding the photovoltaic and fuel cells, youd probably be best of starting your own business, if you have the time.-The best way to make money as an engineer is to graduate.......
I am studing in the field of mechanical engineering..and I am curious to know if there's any way to make money making use of the things I learn in the university..I mean that software engineer students can make money programming, creating small apps for iphone or android..Can an mechanical engineer make use of photovoltaic or fuel cells to make some money?

Depending on what year you're in, this could be pretty difficult. Academic level educations tend to focus on theoretical skills in the first few years. If you're good with CAD, you might be able to get job somewhere. Be prepared for a steep learning curve though. The best way to make money as an engineer is to graduate.

While you are still in school, you can get paid internships or co/ops with companies during your time off over the summers. You can usually make a lot more money than most college summer jobs (I made $9000 in my internship last summer). The university may also pay you to be an undergrad research assistant over the summer. You dont really have opportunities in freelance work as a mechE student because most industries are more tightly regulated than the smartphone app market.

As a mechanical engineering student you don't really learn how to do anything that is worth anything to anyone else.
You don't really find out what engineeing is all about, and learn how to engineer until after you graduate, get a job working in some field of mechanical engineering, and get some experience.

As was stated above, if you can get a job as an intern while a student that is really one of the best ways to go.

It is extremely difficult to make money in your field while still being a student. Even getting an internship or co-op is extremely tough since you are competing with 100+ other students applying for the same internship.

You can try to get one of those $9-14/hr jobs as a Quality Assurance Technician or Manufacturing Assembler. You don't need a degree to get these jobs, but they do get you in the door for manufacturing.

When you graduate as an ME, you might be managing QA or QC workers and assemblers when working in Process Improvement and reliability of machines. So it would be a good experience to know what it will be like to work as the QA technicians and assemblers you might manage in the future so you can better manage them.
