There were no states, just 13 colonies.Delaware was the first state,also Delaware is the only state that does not have a national park. They are planning one now.

They started as 13 colonies of England, but when America claimed its independence, each of the colonies became a state. From there, more states were added to the country until we got all 50, Hawaii being the last, when we (being complete loosers!) overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy.
The original 13 states/colonies were:
Virginia
Massechusetts
New Hampshire
Maryland
Connecticut
Rhode Island
Delaware
North Carolina
South Carolina
New Jersey
New York
Pennsylvania
Georgia
