I'm havin' some trouble with the following math problems:

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-06] [Hit: ]
Solving these two equations simultaneously gives x= 45 mph and t=5hr.With the wind traveling with the plane, x + w = 1800/4,With the wind traveling against the plane,......
1) One car travels 20 miles per hour faster than another. In the same time that one car travels 225 miles, the other travels 325 miles. Find the speed of the slower car.
2) With a wind behind it, a plane can make an 1800 mile flight in 4.5 hours. The return trip, into the wind, takes 5 hours. find the speed of the wind.
Any help is appreciated! Thanks all

Question 1:

The speed of car 1 is x.
The speed of car 2 is x+20

In time t, the slower car (at speed x) travels 225 miles.
Hence x*t=225.

In time t, the faster car (at speed x+20) travels 325 miles.
Hence (x+20)*t=325.

Solving these two equations simultaneously gives x= 45 mph and t=5hr. Hence the speed of the slower car is 45 mph

Question 2:
Let the plane speed = x
Let the wind speed = w

With the wind traveling with the plane, x + w = 1800/4,5
With the wind traveling against the plane, x - w = 1800/5

Solving these two equations gives x=380 and w =20

Hence the wind speed is 20 miles per hour
