How do you solve this (maths algebra)

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-06] [Hit: ]
You had (4x + 1) / 5 = 5 and to remove the fraction, you divided by 5 rather than multiply.You have to do the opposite of what its doing to cancel it.when you took 5 to right side ,you kept it in left side too,Substitute it in the problem itself and check if it satisfies the condition.......
4x+1
------ - 2 = 3
5
(sorry for my annoying setting out but i didnt want the fraction confused with division... but i guess they are the same anyway *shrugs*)
i was doing it like this
4x+1
------ = (3+2) 5
5
4x+1 = 1 (5/5)
4x = 0? (1-1)
that is where i get confused cause u cant divide the 0 by 4 :/
please solve and explain thanks!

-
((4x + 1) / 5) - 2 = 3

Add 2

(4x + 1) / 5 = 5

Multiply by 5

4x + 1 = 25

Subtract 1

4x = 24

Divide by 4

x = 6

----- If you want to know what you did wrong. -----

You had (4x + 1) / 5 = 5 and to remove the fraction, you divided by 5 rather than multiply. You have to do the opposite of what it's doing to cancel it.

-
4x+1/5 -2 =3

4x+1/5 - 10/5 =3
4x+1-10=15
4x=24
x=6

or

4x+1/5 -2 =3

4x+1/5=3+2
4x+1=25
4x=25-1
4x=24
x=6

Mistake you made
when you took 5 to right side ,you kept it in left side too,you should remove 5 from bottom if you move it to right side

-
4x+1
------ - 2 = 3
5

4x+1
------ = 3+2
5

4x+1
------ = 5
5

4x+1 = 5 * 5

4x + 1 = 25

4x = 24

x = 24 / 4

x = 6

Substitute it in the problem itself and check if it satisfies the condition.

-
(4x+1)/5 -2 = 3
(4x+1)/5 = 3+2
(4x+1)/5 = 5
(4x+1)=5*5
4x+1=25
4x=25 - 1
4x=24
x=24/4
x=6

:)
