How do I work out the values of a and b, when x2 – ax + 144 ≡ (x – b)2

(x - b)² = x² - 2bx + b²
therefore
a = 2b and 144 = b²

b = 12 or -12
a = 24 or -24

thus x² - 24x + 144 = (x - 12)²
and x² + 24x + 144 = (x + 12)²
