How do I find x if: x^2+(x+1.78)^2 = sqrt 15.6

x^2 + x^2 + 3.56x + 3.1684 = 243.2x^2 + 3.56x - 240.b = 3.......
This actually isn't homework, but I'm trying to find what the lengths of a laptop screen I'm looking to buy would be. The screen is 15.6 inches along the hypotenuse, and one side of the screen is 1.78 inches longer than the other side. I'm trying to dust out the cobwebs from my mind, but I can't seem to find X

Help please :)

-
a^2 + b^2 = c^2
(c is the hypotenuse)

x^2 + (x + 1.78)^2 = 15.6^2 is the correct expression for your problem

then, just solve
x^2 + x^2 + 3.56x + 3.1684 = 243.36
2x^2 + 3.56x - 240.1916 = 0

use the quad formula
a = 2
b = 3.56
c = -240.1916

thus
x = 10.1049

x^2 + x^2 + 2 x. 1.78 +1.78^2 = 3.94
or,2x^2 +3.56x +3.1683 =3.94
or, 2x^2 + 3.56x -.7716 =0
or,x^2 +1.78 x -.38585=0
or,[ x^2 + 2*x.89 + (.89)^2] -(.89)^2 - .7716 =0
or, (x+ .89)^2 - .7921 -.7716 =0
or,( x+ .89)^2 - 1.5637 =0
or, (x+ .89)^2 = 1.5637
or x+.89 =√ 1.5637
or, x= √1.5637 - .89 =1.25 -.89 = .36
or, x= .36

well i have no clue what u mean by ur screen thing but here the answer 2 ur math problem.
x^2+(x+1.78)^2 = sqrt 15.6
x^2+x^2+3.56x+3.1684=sqrt15.6
combine like terms
2x^2+3.56x+3.1684=sqrt15.6
2x^2+3.56x+3.1684-sqrt15.6=0
take this throw it into wolframalpha.com and u get
x is about -1.97754
or x is about .197539
hope this helps

hyp²=side1² + side2²

x^2+(x+1.78)^2 = 15.6²
Can you make use of MSExcel , to solve it?

I got 10.105 x 11.885 inches size
