Breadth/width? is the meaning the same

I was reading a book about Physics, and it was (just on the off beat) talking about the are of a rectangle being the "breadth x height". The book is written by someone who is British.

I'm wondering, does "breadth" in Britian the same as "width" in the U.S.?

It's a dimension indicating a length.
