At one point in a drag race, Chuck was 15 feet behind Sally and 18 feet ahead of Lucy. Lucy was trailing Kyle by 30 feet. By how many feet was Sally ahead of Kyle?

There are multiple ways, I'll give you two that come to mind. The first would be to draw it out, on a piece of graph paper if you have any. Shade in a space for Chuck, count ahead 15 spaces and shade in Sally. Count back 18 spaces from Chuck and shade in Lucy. Count 30 spaces ahead of Lucy and shade in Kyle. Count the number of spaces between Sally and Kyle.

You could also start with an random number, let's say 60. That number represents Sally. Subtract 15, that number will represent Chuck. Subtract 18 to Chuck to get Lucy's number. Add 30 to Lucy's number to get Kyle's number. What's the difference between the number you started with and the number assigned to Kyle?
