Randy, using his motorboat, took 5 hours to make a downstream trip in a river with a current 8 kph. The return trip upstream took 9 hours. What is the total distance traveled by Randy's boat?

Let speed of the boat be xkm/hr

now speed downstream=x+8 km/hr

speed upstream=x-8 km/hr

now distance travelled is same in both the direction
so ,

(x+8)*5=(x-8)*9

=>solving for x, we get x=28 km/hr

now the speed downstream is 28+8=36 km/hr, and time taken is 5 hrs, so distance is 36*5=180 km

so total distance is 2*180=360 km

downstream resultant speed = (b + 8)
upstream resultant speed = (b – 8)

downstream time = d/(b + 8) = 5
d = 5b + 40
upstream time = d/(b – 8) = 9
d = 9b – 72
5b + 40 = 9b – 72
4b = 112
b = 28 speed of boat
d = 5b + 40
= 140 + 40 = 180 km
total distance = 2 × 180 = 360 km
