Help in maths percentage question

this is the question
The value of a car depreciates by 35% each year
At the end of 2007, the value of the car was £5460
work out the value of the car at the end of 2006

So to decrease something by 35%, you must multiple the number by 0.65 [because 1-0.35 (35%) is 0.65].
This means x times 0.65=5460.
Therefore x=5460 divided by 0.65 which is £8400

Work out the multipler:
100% - 35% = 65%

price in 2006 x the multiplier = price in 2007

So in order to find the price in 2006, reverse the above

price in 2007 / the multipler
5460 / 0.65 = 8400

Check that 8400 x 0.65 = 5460

all you do is 5460 / 100 x 35 which gives you 35%
5460 / 100 = 54.6(this is 1%) so you times it but 35 = 1991
and then take it of your original about the answer is the value at the end...
5460-1991=3469

100%-35%=65%
5460=65% of the value in 2006
So 5460 divided by 65 and then multiplied by 100 should give you your answer ( amount the car was valued in 2006) :)
