PLease "explain" how to divide a negative variable by a number, such as the following...

-y = 1 + 4x (divide both sides by -1)

It's exactly like multiplying by -1 if that helps; you need to flip the signs of everything on both sides of the equal sign. It makes no difference that y is a variable opposed to another number.

-y = 1 + 4x
+y = -1 -4x

Technically you don't need the + sign in front of the y, I just put it there to emphasize the change in sign.

so -1 / -1 =1

1/-1 = -1

4x/-1 = -4x (because positive divided by negative equals negative)

when you decide both sides by -1 it makes a + become - and a - become +

so
-y becomes y
-1 becomes 1
and 4x become -4x
put it all together

y=-1-4x
