Page numbers on facing pages of a book are consecutive integers. The sum of the page numbers on the facing pages of a book is 999. What are the page numbers?

The smallest page number is
the largest page number is

-
a + b = 999

b = a + 1

a + (a + 1) = 999
2a + 1 = 999
2a = 998
a = 499

499 and 500

-
sum of page numbers is 999

the pages are consecutive integers

so if a is page 1
the the next page b would be page a + 1

which is page 2

if a is the lower number page then b = a + 1 is the next pag

the total of these pages is 999

999 = a + b
999 = a + a + 1

998 = 2a

a = 449

b = a + 1

b = 449 + 1
b= 500

so the pages are 500 and 499

-
let x= 1st consecutive integer
let x+1= 2nd consecutive integer

x+x+1=999 (x+x)
2x+1=999 (999-1)
2x=998 (998/2)
x=499

The page numbers are 499 and 500.

-
x+x+1=999 (x is the lower page number, therefore x+1 is the next page. Their total is 999)

2x+1=999
2x=998
x=499

the pages are 499 and 500 (x and x+1)

-
499
500
