The sum of two numbers is less than or equal to 28...? :)

Please help me with this math question i dont understand where to start. Please Explain How you got the answer (If you cant then its fine) :)

The sum of two numbers is less than or equal to 28. The second number is 2 less than the first. What are the possible values for the first of the two numbers?

In your answer, denote the first number by x .

Since the word sum is used, we can assume that addition is used; another words something plus something is less than or equal to 28.

Now the first number is X.

The second number is 2 less than the first, and since the first number is X, you can write the second number as (X - 2).

Now you have everything you need to set up the equation:

X + (X - 2) ≤ 28

Since the sign before the bracket is positive, you can remove the bracket without the values changing. This gives you:

X + X - 2 ≤ 28

which in turn gives you

2X - 2 ≤ 28

Now solve for X like in a regular equation.

Add 2 to both sides of the ≤ sign gives you

2X ≤ 30

Divide both sides by 2 gives you

X ≤ 15


So a possible number for our "first number X" is 15.

Remember that the second number is X - 2, which would mean 15 - 2 =13.

You only want to know the first though, so your answer would be 15.

x + (x – 2) ≤ 28

2x ≤ 30

x≤ 15

x can be anything from –infinity up to 15.

You are probably dealing with just positive integers so you might want to make the range 1 to 15
