Newton's third law question

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-09-07] [Hit: ]
At a certain instant, when m2 has an acceleration a2=2.6 m/s^2, (a) what is the force on m2 and (b) what is the acceleration of m1?If the answers are (a) 9.9 N and (b) 2.......
Two blocks, with masses m1=4.6 kg and m2=3.8 kg, are connected by a light spring on a horizontal frictionless table. At a certain instant, when m2 has an acceleration a2=2.6 m/s^2, (a) what is the force on m2 and (b) what is the acceleration of m1?

If the answers are (a) 9.9 N and (b) 2.1 m/s^2 how would I get there?

~Thanks.

F = ma = 3.8 . 2.6 = 9.88 = 9.9 N

This must be the force on m1 ( as described by the 3rd Law )

9.88 = 4.6 . a

a ( of m1 ) = 9.88 / 4.6 = 2.1478 = 2.1 m/s/s
