What does a stone equal

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-11-12] [Hit: ]
or possibly exactly 14 pounds period. Its commonly used in the UK to weigh people, and thats about all. So someone would refer to their weight as 12 stone 5 pounds, not 173 pounds or (at least in the past) 78 kilograms.-About 14 pounds.......
On here and in real life I always hear people talking about stones( a weight system in England I think) and I was just wondering, what does a stone equal in American pounds? I'm American so when people talk about stones I am completely clueless. Thanks!!

It's exactly 14 pounds for all normal purposes, or possibly exactly 14 pounds period.
