I'm in the Newcastle region. Is it the tail end of a hurricane or something?

Yes, it is a hurricane because the wind has reached what is called hurricane force 12 in the Beaufort scale. That is, in excess of 64 knots as the mean wind speed.

The hurricane is called Dagmar, here in Norway, where it has caused much damages along our west coast. The oil platforms in the North Sea has registered waves up to 30 meters.

The reason we have had many storms lately is that the difference between the Azores high pressure and the so-called Icelandic lows is great. We say that the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is positive. That often happen when the the jet streams are strong, bringing a lot of moist and mild air from the Atlantic.

PS: Here in Norway, we have started to give name to the strong storms. This year we have had, Berit, Cato and now, Dagmar.

You are probably facing an east wind there from the russian steppes. It goes through you circles around and goes through the other way. that coast is the coldest in Uk and also the warmest in the summer. I live on the west coast and the wind there is caused by high lying land either side of the Mersey which channels wind into the river. usually it is fairy warm even if damp but not as cold as on the east coast.
I like a degree of wind it makes the air fresh.

No, just the consequence of a butterfly flapping it's wings in China.
