"Falling stars" are not falling stars. Nor are they shooting, nor any other type of star.

What's commonly called a shooting star is a meteor. They're usually sand grain- up to pebble-sized bits of rock in space that hit the Earth's atmosphere about 70 miles up, traveling anywhere from 20 to 70 miles per second. At that speed, they burn up quickly.

If the chunk of rock is a little larger, it may last a little longer, and also appear to slow slightly because the atmosphere slows it before it's totally disintegrated. These meteors are called "bolides".

In any case, if you see a meteor moving "upward", that's because it hit the atmosphere a long way from you, close to the horizon, and appeared to move higher because it was moving in your direction. You'll have seen planes coming over the horizon towards you, and you know they're not moving vertically upwards, don't you? It's the same perspective.

I'm sorry to hear about your xenophobia, but there's nothing to worry about here.
