What are the two forms of 2-pentene

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-08] [Hit: ]
the two parts of the molecule are on the same side of the double bond, and how the same two parts are across from each other at the double bond in the trans form.......
These are supposed to be the geometric isomers of CH₃CHCHCH₂CH₃......also i don't really know much about this trans and cis stuff

-
It has trans and cis isomers The ch3 parts across the double bonds two carbons if in same side then it is cis and if are in opposite side then it is trans isomers that's all

-
As you have said, the two forms are cis-2-pentene and trans-2-pentene.

"trans" means across, on the other side.
"cis" means on the same side.

See the diagrams at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentene
and notice how in the cis form, the two parts of the molecule are on the same side of the double bond, and how the same two parts are across from each other at the double bond in the trans form.
