i thought only transition elements have multiple oxidation states? like calcium only shows +2 which is in the same period as tin and also not a transition metal.

Period is not an indicator of ox st.
Group is a predictor of ox st.
Sn can be 2+ or 4+, so in that way it is like C which is in the same column.
