Moles is so confusing

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-09-24] [Hit: ]
I mean the definition for mole is the amount of any substance containing as many particles as there are carbon atoms in exactly 12 g of the carbon- 12 isotope. Please help!-1 mole is a number (6.02 * 10^23), it could be atoms or molecules. In the first case there are 1 mole ATOMS of oxygen,......
O in moles is 16.0 grams and there's 6.02 * 10 /\23 atoms in it, but when asked for one mole of O2 ( in grams) why is it 32.0 grams because that would mean that there's 2 * 6.02 * 10 /\23 atoms in it. I mean the definition for mole is the amount of any substance containing as many particles as there are carbon atoms in exactly 12 g of the carbon- 12 isotope. Please help!

1 mole is a number (6.02 * 10^23), it could be atoms or molecules. In the first case there are 1 mole ATOMS of oxygen, whereas in the second case there are 1 mole oxygen MOLECULES. So their number is the same, but the masses differ because O consists only of 1 oxygen atom, whereas O2 molecule consists of 2 oxygen atoms.

O is an atom, O2 is a molecule. One mole of any species contains 6.023 x 10^23 atoms/molecules/ions, depending upon the type of species - whether it is an atom, molecule, or ion. For the case of oxygen atoms vs molecule, it might help if you consider the balanced equation - 2 moles of O(atom) will give you one mole of O2 (molecule). 2 [O] --> O2. Thus one mole of oxygen atom (O) ^ will contain 16 g of O atom, 2 moles of oxygen atoms will form one mole of oxygen molecule, which will contain 32 g of oxygen molecule.
Similarly, consider CaCl2. 1 mole of Ca (element/atom) and 1 mole of Cl2 (molecule) will give 1 mole of CaCl2. Ca + Cl2 --> CaCl2. Now, if you consider it from an ionic perspective, 1 mole of CaCl2 will ionize in water to give you one mole of Ca2+ and 2 moles of Cl- ions (a total of 3 moles of ions).

Usually, since the skin mole is so common, people do not have one ..... Post 40, I have a mole on my right leg on the back right (confusing huh! ...
