or lithium carbonate?...I know the formula for it is Li2CO3 (but i dont know how or where the 2 came from? in Lithium) if that makes any sense.......
I know that it has to do with he amount of oxygen contained such as:

nitride is -N
nitrite is -NO2
nitrate is -NO3

But let assume I want to write out Iron (III) oxide reacts with carbon monoxide to yield iron metal and carbon dioxide

I assume iron metal is just Fe ..what about carbon monoxide and dioxide...is the mono just 1 oxygen??

How would I write out Iron (III) oxide..is there a formula to remember

Can someone with knowledge and background in chem explain to me please. I would be so grateful (:

Hello,

Yes, monoxide just means 1 oxygen. There are prefixes for molecules that are covalently bonded atoms. Mono = 1, di = 2, tri = 3, tetra = 4, penta = 5, hexa = 6, hepta = 7, octa = 8, nona = 9, deca = 10, etc.

The (III) in Iron (III) simply indicates the charge of the iron cation, it is a 3+ charge. Then, you can figure out that the compound for Iron(III) oxide is Fe2O3. Some people would reccomend the criss cross formula where you zig zag the charge of one ion as the subscript of the other, but that may just end up confusing people. I reccomend just looking at the charges and coming up with the common multiple that makes them equal but opposite. For example, Fe is 3+ and O is 2-. The common multiple is 6, so you need to multiply Fe by 2 and O by 3 and you get Fe2O3.

The charge of CO3 is 2-, and Li is 1+. You need 2 Li to balance out the 2- charge from the CO3 so it is Li2CO3. <<
