?can someone xplain to me how to do this cuz im kinda lost and im revising the easy bits for my exam on friday... ;( many thanx :) xoxox-standard form is also known as scientific notation (and im hoping thats what you mean in this case b/c theres standard forms for other things but with more specific names such as standard form of an equation or general form of a polynomial)if you are allowed to use a calculator on this test then this becomes fairly easy for you. i would suggest a scientific calculator with parathesis buttons (most highschools mandate it) or even better.......
Work out, expressing your answers in standard form, (6 x 106) ÷ (8 x 103)

Work out, expressing your answers in standard form, 1.5 x 105 - 8 x 104

Work out, expressing your answers in standard form, 3 x 104 + 6 x 103

why is it different for adding/subtracting and multiplying/dividing etc...?

if you are allowed to use a calculator on this test then this becomes fairly easy for you. i would suggest a scientific calculator with parathesis buttons (most highschools mandate it) or even better... a graphing calculator if you have and know how to use (if not, dont go crazy unless you need it for next year... they are pricey)

solve the equation in the calculator and your answer and then put into standard form which means that if the answer if HUGE you are going to move the decimal over all the way to the left until there is only ONE digit before the decimal (ex: 389765432 becomes 3.89...) and count the number of decimal places you moved over because you are going to multiply the number you got by 10 raised to the power of however many decimal places you moved (ex 389 = 3.89 x 10^2)
for MINISCULE numbers you do the same thing except you move the decimal place to the RIGHT and the exponent becomes negative (ex: .000043298 = 4.3298 x 10^ -5)
**remember to count carefully and dont forget the correct sign AND when putting into the calc. use CORRECT PARENTHESIS....... the calculator goes by PEMDAS....order of operations so be careful!!!
