Solve by the addition method:
5x-y=18
x+7y=18

A basketball player scored 32 times during one game. She scored a total of 50 points, two for each two-point shot and one for each free throw. How many two point shots did she make? How many free-throws?

Soybean meal is 18% protein; cornmeal is 9% protein. How many pounds of each should be mixed together in order to get 360 lb mixture that is 12% protein?

1:
(4,2)

2:
18 two point shots, 14 free throws

3:
120 pounds soybean meal and 240 pounds cornmeal

1).
5x - y = 18
x + 7y = 18
35x - 7y = 126
36x = 144
x = 4
y = 2

2).
A basketball player scored 32 times during one game.
She scored a total of 50 points, two for each two-point shot and one for each free throw.
x + y = 32
2x + y = 50
x = 18
She made 18 two point shots
and 14 free-throws.

3).
Soybean meal is 18% protein; cornmeal is 9% protein.
How many pounds of each should be mixed together
in order to get 360 lb mixture that is 12% protein?
Let the mixture consist of x lb soybean meal and y lb cornmeal.
x + y = 360
0.18x + 0.09(360 - x) = 0.12*360
x = 120
120 lb of soybean meal and 240 lb of cornmeal
should be mixed together.

a)5x-y=18 so 35x-7y=126
x+7y=18 Add equations
36x = 144
x = 4 and y = 2
b)A+B = 32
2A+B = 50 subtract equations
A = 18 two point shots
B = 14 free throws
c)0.18S + 0.09C = 360*0.12
S+C = 360 so S = 360 - C
0.18(360-C) + 0.09C = 43.2
64.8 -0.09C = 43.2
C = 240 lb
S = 120 lb

1st problem:

5x - y = 18 <=> 5x - y = 18 <=> 5(18-7y) - y = 18 <=> 90 - 36y = 18 <=> 36y = 72 <=> y = 2

x + 7y = 18 <=> x = 18 - 7y <=> x = 18 -7*2 <=> x = 4

2nd problem:

x-> number of 2point shots
y-> number of free shots

x + y = 32 <=> x = 32 - y <=> x = 32 - 14 <=> x = 18

2x + y = 50 <=> 2(32 - y) + y = 50 <=> 64 - y = 50 <=> y = 14

3rd problem:

x-> lbs of soybean
y-> lbs of cornmeal

x + y = 360 <=> x = 360 - y <=> x = 360 - 240 <=> x = 120

18x + 9y = 12*360 <=> 18(360 - y) + 9y = 4320 <=> 6480 - 9y = 4320 <=> -9y = -2160 <=> y = 240

-
5x-y=18 (1)
x+7y=18 (2)
7 times (1) gives 35x -7y = 126 (3)
(2) +(3) gives 36x = 144
x = 144/36 = 4
Sub. x=4 into (2)
4 + 7y = 18
7y = 14
y = 2
>>>. ( 4,2)

The top addision is x= 4 and y = 2
The second thing is for 32 points she does 15 two point shots and 2 free throws :)
and for the final thing erm I ain't sure soz
