Nine years from now, Judy will be three times as old as she was 11 years ago. How old is she now?

Let x = age she is now

x + 9 = 3 (x - 11)

age she is now is 3 times age she was 11 yrs ago


Solve:

x + 9 = 3(x - 11)

use the distributive property first

x + 9 = 3x - 33

subtract x from both sides

9 = 2x - 33

add 33 to both sides

42 = 2x

divide both sides by 2

x = 21 She's 21 years old today. Have a drink.

Let Judy's present age = j years
11 years ago her age was = j -11
9 years from now , her age will be = j + 9
Given : (j+9) = 3(j-11)
=> j + 9 = 3j - 33
=> 33 + 9 = 3j - j
=> 42 = 2j
=> j = 21
Answer

let her present age be x years
x+9=3(x-11)
x+9=3x-33
2x=42
x=21years!!!

N+9 = 3 * (N - 11)

N+9=3N-33

2N = 42

N = 21

x+9 = 3(x-11)
x+9 = 3x-33
2x = 42
x = 21

21

She is 21!

If x is her current age:

x + 9 = 3*( x - 11)

2x = 42

x = 21

So she is currently 21
