I don't really understand the difference between a parameter or a statistic. My homework's asking me to identify the number that's in caps lock (Ex: TWENTY-FOUR%) as either a parameter or statistc and say why?

a. Gallup's job data show that 28% of Americans aged 18 to 29, TWENTY-FOUR% of those with no college education, and 22% of women were underemployed in August.

b. Starting from nothing 15 years ago, sales of crossovers passed those of traditional SUVs in 2006 and have kept on growing. They now exceed two million. Traditional SUVs, meanwhile, peaked in 2002 around three million, and now account for less than one million sales. So far in 2010, crossover sales have leapt ahead 24%, and crossovers now account for TWENTY-THREE.SEVEN% of the market -- nearly a quarter of it.

c. In a study of 867 U.S. adults, researchers at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, found that prescription antihistamine users were more likely to be overweight or obese than non-users were. Among the 268 antihistamine users, FORTY-FIVE% were overweight, versus 30 percent of the 599 study participants not on the medications.

d. While a majority of American voters think the Muslim group that wants to put a mosque near ground zero has the right to build it there, most think it would be wrong to do so. A Fox News poll released Friday found that SIXTY-ONE% of voters think the Muslim group has the right to build a mosque in lower Manhattan. However, 64 percent think it would be wrong to put a mosque there.

What's the difference? I don't get this at all. :/

Parameter is a constant which describes the statistical structure of the population.
Statistic is a figure derived from the sample. It is a function of the sample values. It is an estimate of a parameter.
a) I don't know whether 'Gallup's job data' is survey based, if it is, TWENTY-FOUR% is a statistic.
b) Parameter
c) Statistic
d) Statistic
