The best way to prevent this is to slowly lower the dose and taper off of the medication, a physician will be able to look at your medication history and design an appropriate method of tapering off the medication.......
I am NOT on the stuff. I'm curious to hear a medical opinion.

It would depend on the dose and the duration of use in an individual (basically we need to be able to assess whether or not any component of physical tolerance has had an opportunity to develop). If sufficiently high doses have been used for an extended period of time, we'd likely need to taper rather than quit abruptly. This is true regardless of whether the use is legitimate or illicit.

Morphine is an interesting drug. IF you are taking it for real pain, and NOT taking it recreationally, then often you can simply stop taking the drug and suffer no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever, even after having taken it for months. If you've been taking it recreationally, then it can be difficult to get off of. You might need medical assistance to get off the drug. Tranquilizers and anti-anxiety medications often help a lot. See a doctor for further advice and assistance if you need to get off the drug.

If used recreationalally it is more complicated because there are psychological issues that need to be dealt with as well. If it had just been used for pain, which has since resolved you can stop abruptly if you have only been on it short term, if you have been on it more than a few weeks you will likely have withdrawal symptoms if you suddenly stop. The best way to prevent this is to slowly lower the dose and taper off of the medication, a physician will be able to look at your medication history and design an appropriate method of tapering off the medication.
