heres how to do this one: Shear stress=Force tangent to area/area.150/(3e-1*1.5e-2)=3.33e4.For shear strain, x/h,......
1) A rectangular block of rubber measures 200 x 300 x 15 mm and is to be tested for its shearing properties. It is bonded to a flat plate using the 300 x 15 mm surface and a force of 150 N is applied across the free end of the block so that the surface moves sideways. (The 200 mm dimension projects from the fixing plate.) Calculate the shear stress and shear strain in the rubber and also its shear modulus.

2) A mild steel tie rod with a circular cross section is being designed to carry a direct load of 12 kN working at a safety factor of three based on yield stress. Using a reference source find the value of the yield strength of mild steel and then calculate a suitable diameter for the rod.

PLEASE show me how its done! thanks!

Hey Armano,

No problem man, here's how to do this one: Shear stress=Force tangent to area/area. 150/(3e-1*1.5e-2)=3.33e4. For shear strain, x/h, where x is the displacement of the block under stress, and h is the height of the block under stress. Do you have x?

(2) Could you explain what you mean by safety factor?
