Why is a cellar safe during a tornado

The air would flow around you and leave you be. If the holes are too big on the draw then the air has plenty of room to rush around. Displaced pressure. It must be focused to a certain diameter in order to pose a threat to someone in their spider hole.Or something like that :)-Believe it or not, a tornado can create wind speeds greater than that of a hurricane.......

The air must be replaced with something if it is pulled out fo the room. A basement or storm shelter can't really replace the air with anthing since the one place the storm would be sucking the air in the room from is already being used and no air can enter the room to replace that which is being lost. Plus, if the entire floor is ripped off leaving only an vast exposed hole, in order for a wind tunnel or a "suction" to occur, the draw and displacement must be porportional somewhat in order to create the force necessary to move a human body. It is the weight of the air being displaced rushing past and carrying you with it that would draw you out of your hole. If the air feed in is too narrow, the rush of air out would be to slow to move you. The air would flow around you and leave you be. If the holes are too big on the draw then the air has plenty of room to rush around. Displaced pressure. It must be focused to a certain diameter in order to pose a threat to someone in their spider hole.

Or something like that :)

Believe it or not, a tornado can create wind speeds greater than that of a hurricane. That is because a tornado is concentrated to a specific area, whereas a hurricane is wide-spread. That is why a tornado does its' destruction. A cellar, or anywhere underground is the best place to be.

Believe wind speeds are slower the lower you go. And biggest threat from a tornado(your AVERAGE tornado anyway) is flying debris. I think if a tornado goes right on top of you while you're in a ditch you'll be screwed anyway, but you're less likely to get hit with a flying stick.

Because the winds only extent to ground level so you are safe below ground. Tornadoes do not suck thinks up. It is the winds of up to 300MPH to blow you around and again winds do not blow below ground.
