Can someone explain to me why this hurricane Irene is dangerous( by dangerous I mean minor injuries losing limbs or getting killed) ?-When Irene hits Long Island, it will be a Category 1 hurricane, this means damaging winds, down pours, downed power lines,......
I'm on vacation with my older cousins at the family getaway home in long island . I was supposed to be here for two weeks just got here like 2 days ago and I'm so mad why do I have to go home tommorrow morning. Seriously isn't it just some heavy winds and rains and occassionally fallen trees and things. I mean the house is pretty sturdy and there's enough food if we get stuck a few days or so. The only bad thing I've heard was no electricity but I can do many other fun things. Can someone explain to me why this hurricane Irene is dangerous( by dangerous I mean minor injuries losing limbs or getting killed) ?

When Irene hits Long Island, it will be a Category 1 hurricane, this means damaging winds, down pours, downed power lines, and LOTS of flooding because Long Island is surrounded by water.
Hurricanes are very dangerous, Irene will be having 70 mph winds when it reaches you, and about 10-15 inches of rain. It's something to take very seriously, if you are outside, you will be killed, sorry. That's what they evacuated all the coastal cities and towns, there will be life threatening flooding and winds.

Storm surge will kick your ***, supposed to be 4- 7 foot waves, 100 mph winds SUSTAINED. I'm a little worried about it, since I live near the shore, but no evacuations are taking place, because we aren't directly on the shore.. basically, get your butt out of there by at least Saturday morning.

Well, for a lot of people it's the huge floods which are forcasted, for others it's the wind and fear of a tree falling on their house

Being in long island you must be quite close to the beach. During tropical storms or hurricanes the waves and flooding can completley wipe out houses or property.

-
The closer you are to the beach, the more stronger/dangerous the hurricane is.

mite loose power

n maybe some houses cud get damaged
