Kt Skycat say: It does, but there is also a protective ozone layer that diffuses much of the sun's rays in the atmosphere around the earth. (Hence the concern for the hole in the ozone layer!)

MARK say: At a mean distance of ca. 150 000 000 km from the Earth the Sun is not hot enough and does not emit sufficient heat to burn the Earth.

The European Space Agency are planning on launching an orbiter to study the Sun. It will orbit the Sun from a distance of about 42 000 000 km and is expected to be only exposed to a temperature of 1377 degrees Celsius.
