Does anyone know if any earth threatening asteroids will hit earth this century ? Also should I worry about all this ? I just always worry?

answers:
Manuel say: Nothing on the radar at the moment, just chill.
-
vic say: Nasa has it all figured out, no need to worry
-
Clive say: Nobody knows. The trouble is that they're too dim to even FIND them.

But anyway, look at history. It's very rare. There is far more that will probably happen and I'd worry about that more if I were you. Climate change for a start. And if a really big one was heading our way, there is nothing anyone can do about it, so what's the point in knowing?
-
Const. King say: Rumor has it in 2023 the big one is coming. Don't worry about it, you won't know what hit you.
-
Ronald 7 say: We will be fine
We still have Will Smith and Bruce Willis
-
Starrysky say: Asteroid impact is a problem that should be attended to, but there are more immediate and serious things to worry and do something about.
People who say the chances are small are right. Statistics say you have a similar but slightly higher risk of dying from effects of a large asteroid hit than dying in a commercial airliner crash.
What does that mean, really? People die by dozens in airliner crashes around the world every year. But billons ride safely. Very small chance.
The asteroid risk is there because a large one (over several miles or kilometers across) would terminate most life. Slightly smaller might make life miserable for most everyone who survives. Way smaller are a very low risk. Only one human, a man in Egypt last century was seen to die from a hit. Maybe more recently an Indian man was killed. And in 1871 during the huge Chicago fire, a neighboring town also burned for no known reason. Some speculate that hot meteorites started one or both of those. The Chelyabinsk meteor was a 60 foot rock that exploded over a city in Russia 6 years ago. Not predicted. Injured more than a thousand.
Long term, NASA and others are patrolling for rocks that might be a serious threat. The thinking is that they have found 90% of all the larger ones. But the other 10%? And what about surprises? The interstellar visitor O`maumau was flying outbound before it was seen. And it was about a third of a mile long. One that size hitting in the ocean at 150,000 mph would make the Japan tsunami seven years ago look like a birthday party by comparison. A medium sized one hitting a city of a country with nukes might start a really bad war.
The wild card is a comet. New, unpredictable ones appear at any time. The core of one could be a very large mass of ice and rocks. There would be no lengthly warning time to do anything about it if we are a target.
The dinosaurs had no detection facility or space program to help them from avoiding extinction. We do. We use those. But it is a game of chance. We are crossing fingers and hope to avoid the more serious threats. But nothing is certain. The people who say "millions of years apart on average" are forgetting what "average" means. No schedule or predictable separation from previous in history.

tham153 say: depends on size. Earth picks up about 100 tonnes/day of miscellaneous junk. If you mean one large enough to duplicate the Chicxulub impact that wiped the dinosaurs, not likely for the next few centuries.
-
William say: Although there is the remote possibility of an asteroid strike, the probability of being effected by one is so tiny that it is ridiculous. Statistically speaking you are exponentially more likely to die from a falling tree or a car accident, fire or other calamity. Of all things to worry about, heart disease, cancer, infectious disease, etc etc are your greatest threats. Put that worry into taking good care of yourself and being a safe and courteous driver. Asteroids are about the least threat you can imagine.
-
canadacraig say: I don't know. But I'd keep my running shoes on just in case.
-
Mr. Smartypants say: The next big asteroid to hit the earth will find us all already dead. We'll kill ourselves long before aliens or asteroids do.
-
Colleen say: Nope! You're all good!
-
dave say: I think there is a big un that comes close but will miss in 2028 however they say if it comes too close that earths gravitational pull alters its coarse then it is likely to hit on its next approach in 2036 or 2038.
-
Poseidon say: At the moment there are no space objects, meteors asteroids etc, which pose any threat to the Earth but of course in the next 81 years that could change.

Unless or until 'Asteroid Seekers' find something that is likely to threaten the Earth we must consider ourselves safe.
-
Tom S say: No one knows for sure, but none are known to pose a threat.
-
Joseph say: Are you worried about a grand piano falling on your head as you walking down the street. No? You should! The chances of that happening to you are greater than the Earth getting hit by an life ending asteroid.
-
busterwasmycat say: Should you worry about something over which you have absolutely no control? I do not see a value to it. Add in the extremely low level of risk, and you are wasting your opportunity of existence that is life.

I am (and you are) more likely, a LOT more likely, to have a heart attack in five minutes from now than that the earth will get hit by a killer asteroid within a year. Do you worry about that heart attack? No? Why not?
-
D g say: Reallly... do you worry about getting hit by lightning when the thunder storms happen.

if you get hit by an asteroid it wont matter will it
-
Petter say: It could happen five minutes from now, or five million years from now. Why worry? You might as well worry for the sky to fall down. (pun intended)
-
Quakin' Stevens say: You should worry twice as much as you currently do. In his way you achieve your optimum quality of life.

thanks, love you xxx
-
chris n say: Unlikely. Asteroids have been whizzing past us for centuries - probably thousands since you were born - and you knew nothing about it. Now some newspaper has mentioned that we are inspecting asteroids and talking about them and you have panicked unnecessarily. Not a problem. Forget it. There are plenty of REAL problems to worry about.
-
Jim say: The odds against an asteroid hitting Earth this century are about 100000 to one.

You may as well think of it as not going to happen.
-
Acetek say: there is nothing to worry about.
-
someg say: There is no threat of asteroids. Nibiru will get here first.
-
Nana say: EXCLUSIVE: These THREE asteroids REALLY could HIT Earth and 'wipe ... us not to worry about wild conspiracy theories, because if a rock that ... But our probe also identified TWO other significant-sized asteroids ... NASA is so concerned it is planning as early as next year to send an ..... All rights reserved.

Barry say: Why worry about things that you have no control over?
