Why do you year crackling coming fromm the electric wires on pylons

The crackling is due to what are called corona discharges at regions of high electric field strength around the conductors. The discharges are due to local breakdown of the air under the high electric field. They occur at double grid frequency (i.e 100 or 120 Hz.) on each positive and negative half cycle. The effect is stronger under humid conditions since more air then breaks down.
