5(2)^2-3(^2)

What type of math class?: Probably Algebra 1, maybe the beginning of Algebra 2.

It would fall under a chapter containing exponents, since this problem basically has a bunch of exponents in it. You could use logarithms to simplify this as well, but logarithms are just inverse exponents. I said exponents a lot. Oh well...
