???y = -2 -- Your done!......
x+y=2
x-y=6 ...... y= ????

What does y equal?

-
x + y = 2
x - y = 6

Get "x" alone

x + y = 2
__-y = -y
x = 2 - y

x - y = 6
_+y = +y
x = 6 + y

Make the x's equal each other

2 - y = 6 + y
__-y = __-y
2 - 2y = 6
-2_____-2
-2y = 4
-2y / -2 = 4 / -2
y = -2 <--- This is your answer!

-
Here is how you solve this sort of thing

x + y = 2

x - y = 6

You want to solve for y, so you need to combine these two equations in such a way that you
get rid of the x. Do that by subtracting the second equation from the first one. This means
that you subtract the left hand sides and the right hand sides respectively. Note that x - x =0
and y - (-y) = 2 y. Now you have

2 y = -4

y = -2

-
Add the 2 equations together:

(x + y) + (x - y) = 2 + 6
x + y + x - y = 8
2x = 8
x = 4

Now, plug that value for x back into one of the equation, then solve for y:

x + y = 2
4 + y = 2
y = 2 - 4
y = -2

There you go

-
x+y=2
x-y=6 ...... y= ????

x + y = 2 -- Solve for x
x = 2 - y -- Substitute into other Equation
(2 - y) - y = 6 -- Combine like terms
2 - 2 y = 6 -- Minus 2 from both sides
-2y = 4 -- divide by -2
y = -2 -- Your done!

-
I can't completely remember but i think to find y you just plug in 0 for x so on the first one it would be y=2 and second one y=-6

-
x+y=2
x-y=6
x=y+6
(y+6)+y=2
2y+6=2
2y= -4
y= -2
x=4

-
y = -2

-
x=4
y=10
