Your teacher made the question easy by adding the denominator of 72...

Let's first look at the right hand side and make a common denominator..

we have.. 11/72 = | (8x)/72 - (27x)/72|
Then combine like terms
11/72 = |(-19x)/72|
Since we have a denominator of 72 on both sides, we can multiple both sides by 72 eliminating the need for that denominator

11 = |-19x|

x=11/19
x= -11/19

both answers are correct since x is inside the absolute value.
