A bill for $74 was paid with $5 notes and 1$ notes. 50 notes were used. How many $5 and $1 were used

How do I solve this? I don't know how to make the equation out of it.

Let x be the amount of 1 dollar bills and y the amount of 5 dollar bills.

There will be two equations:

1. x + y = 50 (how many bills used)
2. 5y + x = 74 (this one determines how much of each bill is used.)

Hint: in the first formula, x can = y - 50. From there, just substitute your known values.

-x+-y=-50

4x=24

Here's how you solve it:

Let n = number of $5 notes. Then there are 50-n $1 notes
5n + (50-n) = 74

4n + 50 = 74

n = 6 $5 notes and 50-6=44 $1 notes.

I started with 50 notes equals $50 and then traded fives for ones until the amounts balanced. 49 $1 and 1 $5 then 48 $1 and 2 $5 etc.
