Simplify #'s by dividing all by 3
Since you want to complete the square I am going to guess that that should be a 36x
x^2 + bx + c
x^2 + 12x + ___= -14......................(b/2)^2 = (12/2)^2= 6^2 = 36

x^2 + 12x + 36 = -14 + 36
(x + 6)^2 = 22...............................take sq.rt

√(x + 6)^2 = ±√22
x + 6 = ±√22
x = -6 ± √22

-
3x^2 + 36 = -42
3x^2 = -78
x^2 = -26
there is no real answer to this equation. completing the square is not the way to solve it.
the nonreal answers: x = sqrt(26)i or -sqrt(26)i

-
3x^2+36=-42
3x^2=-7
x^2=-7/3
x= ±√(7/3)
Ans) x=+√(7/3) or x=-√(7/3)
