My boyfriend wants me to paint him a painting because he's useless at art & im a B grade art student but he made his own canvace using wood & canvace paper, my question is do i need to prime it before i begin to paint or cant i start the way it is? 10points:)

You should prime it with gesso, or else the paint will soak into the canvas. Gesso makes a better surface to paint on.

You also need to use gesso for permanence, since the oil in the paint can soak into the canvas and make it rot. I'm not sure whether this would be a problem if you are using acrylics.
