so 4.0x10^5 = 400000 x 3000, so there are 1200000000. Now turn that into scientific notation. 1.Simply do that same for the 2nd problem,......
(4.0x10^5) x (3.0x10^3)

(8.9x10^5) / (3.0x10^3

Can you guys please show the work and explain what you did please. Thanks guys.

Basically, if you have a scientific calculator it'll solve it for you.

BUT if you dont, simple, covert those numbers into the long form... so 4.0x10^5 = 400000 x 3000, so there are 1200000000. Now turn that into scientific notation. 1.2x10^9 (answer)

Simply do that same for the 2nd problem, convert those # into long form... 890000/ 3000 =

296.6666666666667 , --> 2.9x10^2 (It's just gonna be 2 sigfig, because the lowest # of sig-fig is 2, so there will be 2 sig-fig on the answer)

this type of multiplication and division is very simple, and in chemistry and physics you will see it a lot.

(4.0 * 10^5) ( 3.0 * 10^3) first calculate the multiplication of the base numbers which 4*3=12. then add the multiples of 10 which is 8

(12 * 10^8) next move the decimal over one position to the left making 1.2 and add one number to the notation

Final = (1.2 * 10^9)

(8.9*10^5) / (3.0*10^3) again start with the whole numbers 8.9/3.0 = 2.96667.
Next subtract the multiples of 10. 5-3=2

Final= 2.96667 * 10^2 however your answer must only have 2 significant figures so the modified answer will be (3.0 * 10^2)

-
in each of the above, the answer has 2 significant digits.

Use your calculator for the multiplication.

When you do the division, make sure you use brackets for the denominator
