In a formal lab report, does the whole thing need to be in past tense 3rd person, or is it just the method

Thanks!-.......
By past tense 3rd person I mean like, "200mL of water was poured into a 250mL beaker and placed on hot plate for X minutes." I know there's another name for that tense, I just don't know what it is. Anyway, does the whole lab report have to be in that tense, or just the method. I've heard either so I'm confused. Thanks!
