so multiply the denominator by 3 so it can equal to 6, then multiply the numerator by 3 to even it out.the second one you need to change the mixed fraction into a improper fraction. to do this you multiply the whole number and the denominator. then add the product to the numerator to get the new numerator which is 7.then same rules apply to the second mixed fraction.......
1/2 - 5/6

and -1 1/8 + 5 3/4

My book has barely any info.

you want to first change the denominator so they match

the factors are:
1: 1,2
6: 1,2,3,6

6 would work best, so multiply the denominator by 3 so it can equal to 6, then multiply the numerator by 3 to even it out.

3/6 - 5/6 = -2/6 reduce it so it can be -1/3

the second one you need to change the mixed fraction into a improper fraction. to do this you multiply the whole number and the denominator. then add the product to the numerator to get the new numerator which is 7. so your new fraction is -7/8

then same rules apply to the second mixed fraction. you get 23/4.

so now its -7/8 + 23/4, the same rules as the first problem apply, so now its:

-7/8 + 46/8= 39/8

now, divide the numerator (the 39) by the denominator (the 8). This will give you 4, with a remainder of 7. The mixed number can be created by using the 4 as the whole number, the 7 as the numerator
and the 8 as the denominator.

1/2 - 5/6
first you need to find a common denominator, in this case the 6 in 5/6 is the common denominator because 2 can go into it 3 times. So you multiply 1/2 by 3 on both 1 and 2. So you should end up with
3/6 - 5/6, which equals -2/6, which can be reduced to -1/3

-1 1/8 and 5 3/4
I usually make them into improper fractions, by simply multiplying the denominator (8) by the whole number (-1) and then adding the numerator (1). your first number should be -7. The second number should be 23. -7-23 = -30

-
1/2 - 5/6

3/6 - 5/6 = - 2/6 or - 1/3

-1 1/8 + 5 3/4

- 9/8 + 23/4

- 9/8 + 46/8

37/8
