How do you solve 5/2x + 3/4 = 9/4x

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-05-30] [Hit: ]
I.e, what you do to the left, you do to the right.Therefore you were right.-I am going to assume that the 2x and the 4x are both the complete denominators.......
The equation 5/2x + 3/4 = 9/4x is in fraction form and has been troubling me for quite a while now. I keep getting the solution as -1/3 but when i go back to check, the solution does not work. Is the solution extraneous or am i just doing it wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Multiply out the fractions, you must multiply EVERYthing the same. I.e, what you do to the left, you do to the right.

5/2x + 3/4 = 9/4x
times 2x

5+6x/4=18x/4x
simplify
5+3x/2=9/2
minus the 5
3x/2=-1/2
Now multiply by the 2
3x=-1
x=-1/3

test it

5/(2(-1/3))+3/4=9/(4(-1/3))

Each side equals -27/4

Therefore you were right.

I am going to assume that the 2x and the 4x are both the complete denominators. Be careful how you write fractions. In this type of medians, it would better to write it this way:
5/(2x) + 3/4 = 9/(4x)

Multiply the entire equation by 4x to get rid of all the denominators.

4x { 5/(2x) + 3/4 = 9/(4x) }
10 + 3x = 9 (You can see how it is starting to look easy once the fractions are gone)
3x = -1
x = -1/3 (You are right in your calculations)

Proof: Be careful with your fractions. Remember, when you divide fractions, always use the reciprocal of the divisor after you change your division into a multiplication problem.

you take the 5/2X to the other side of the equal sign, which would give you 3/4=9/4x - 5/2x
This would then be equal to 3/4= -1/4x...... then you must divide both sides by the -1/4 eliminating it from the -1/4x so you would just have x.... when you do, x= -3
hope i was of some assistance =]

Ok, so first you have to get the "x" values to one side, we'll do 5/2. 3/4=-1/4. then you divide the x value to get the value of x= 3/4 div -1/4 = -3
Therefore youyr answer should be -3, i think.

-
5/2x - 9/4x = -3/4
or,(10 -9) = - 12x/4
or, 1 = -3x
or,x= -1/3

-
The answer should be -3

9/4x-5/2x is -1/4x
3/4 divided by -1/4 is -3
